I had never watched basketball properly before, nor had I ever been to a game in person. So, when I was asked to tackle the challenge of filming the high-profile match between the MK Breakers and USA Select, I was genuinely excited to jump in.

Having delivered great results across other fast-paced environments like motocross and rugby, delivering sports video production in Milton Keynes for a high-energy basketball match was an action-packed challenge I was really looking forward to.

Anticipation: The Key to Filming Fast-Paced Sports

One of the most important elements of any sports videography is anticipation. When you are on the court-side line, you can't just react to the ball - you have to read the flow of the play, anticipate where the ball is moving next, and predict what's about to happen before it happens

Filming fast-paced sports like basketball requires a quick mind and instant adjustments. If you wait until a player shoots or breaks into a sprint, you've already missed the shot.

Staying Adaptable: Ditching the Gimbal

Working in different filming environments with all kinds of subjects has taught me one major lesson: you must be adaptable.

I realized very quickly that trying to track the game on a gimbal was slowing me down. To get the best shots, I ditched the gimbal entirely and decided to follow the play directly through the camera's viewfinder.

Eliminating external distractions helped me focus completely on the flow of the game, keeping the action framed cleanly and instantly tracking fast movements across the court.

The Camera Kit Behind the Action

To capture the energy and speed of the game, I used a practical kit setup:

Sony A7C II: Lightweight and fast, perfect for agile handheld sports tracking.

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art II: My main lens for court-side wide shots and close-up action.

Vivitar 70-210mm Vintage Zoom Lens: Used to give me that extra reach for far-court shots and isolated player reactions.

Settings: 60 fps, 4k for clear high quality shots and easy slow motion effects in post

High Energy Court-Side Atmosphere

Both teams showed incredible skill and endurance throughout the match. The atmosphere in the room was electric - the crowd was fully engaged, and the roar of the audience mixed with an off-court drummer created a high-energy environment that was fantastic to capture on film.

Delivering Social Media and Website Video Assets

The ultimate goal of the shoot was to deliver high-quality video content suitable for website features and social media clips, highlighting the key moments and dramatic pace of the match.
